Sony A7R II Image Quality - Sensor Exposed

A7R II Review – 05 – Image Quality, Image Related Specs, RAW Download

Sony’s high resolution sensor does not fail to impress. Its efficiency in combination with the alias filter being negated result in a very high standard image quality. The files are full of detail. I, for instance, have never witnessed as much detail and sharpness in a picture. I feel like I could print images as large as a frickin’ house.

CHARACTER
I can see a big difference in many aspects compared to my A7. The grain has another character and looks more “sandy”.
Color noise behaves differently, too. It pops up in places I’ve never seen color noise before. Even at base ISO. Of course, all this when shooting RAW.
I think they should go easy on the MP count from now on. It feels like they have reached an efficiency/high MP count limit for full frame. But who am I to doubt that Sony will impress us yet again in the time to come. Oh Sony, you.

DYNAMIC RANGE
Sony’s sensors are highly regarded in terms of dynamic range and as it should, it performs at its best at base ISO.
I did indeed see some slight improvements over the original A7′ DR. Compared to other brands, it should as always have about a 3-4 stops advantage.
According to my tests the DR is a little better on the A7R II. The A7R II exposed a little brighter than former A7’s and you can play around a little more with the shadows and highlights slider in Lightroom.

DETAIL COMPARISON – A7RII vs A7 vs A6000
We’ve mounted a 70-200 f4 on a tripod and changed the bodies to test out the detail in various shots with the same settings. Since the A6000 has a cropped APS-C sized sensor it should show more detail at base ISO in good light.
So, which camera has more detail?

TEST 1:
– Object about 15m away
– ISO 100

Winner:
1. A7R II
2. A6000
3. A7

TEST 2:
– Object about 75m away
– ISO 100

Winner:
1. A7R II on par with A6000 and A7
We couldn’t see anything significant at good weather conditions at that large distance. But we’re giving the A7R II a slight advantage. Nothing big, though.

TEST 3:
– Object about 75m away
– ISO 1600

Winner:
1. A7R II
2. A6000
3. A7
